The Three Top North American Ski Resorts: Whistler, Aspen & Jackson Hole

When the snow starts to fall, the mountainous regions of the United States and Canada transform into a playground for winter sports enthusiasts. Whether you’re looking for runs that challenge your technique or family-friendly slopes, the diversity of ski resorts across the U.S. and Canada ensures there is something for everyone.- and no luxury skiing holiday is the same. Alongside the ever-growing importance of experiences outside of the slopes - fine-dining restaurants with guest appearances to Après-Ski entertainment and of course, the abundance of alternative winter experiences. The Conte Club is often asked which are the top American ski resorts, and though a difficult question, the below three nominations each catch our eye for their unique identities & numerous offerings.

Aspen, Colorado: Top American Ski Resort for Winning Slopes & Exquisite Dining

Aspen plays host to many a winning record - not only was it voted No. 1 in Condé Nast Traveller's 2023 Reader's Choice Awards for the Best Ski Resort in the U.S. and Canada, but it also has a significant hold in ski statistics in the US. Falling just behind Telluride, also in Colorado, Snowmass is the highest of Apsen's peaks and offers the second biggest vertical drop in the U.S. - at 4406 vertical feet. Its advantageous ski environment, however, is not Aspen's only claim to fame; it has also been voted the best après-ski destination and offers an eclectic mix of restaurants, bars and chalets to suit all dining preferences.

The slopes of the ski range in Aspen, Colorado are famous for their varied difficulty and beautiful scenery.

Falling in the remote area of the Rocky Mountains' Sawatch Range and Elk Mountains, Aspen, with its four distinct mountains - Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass - offers something for every level of skier. Across the 5600 acres of ski-able terrain, you'll find that Buttermilk is ideal for beginners and families due to its gentler learning slopes. It's also famously been the host of the X-Games for over two decades, and the two parks on its slopes are home to more than 100 features, as well as a pipe, ready to be explored. On the other hand, Aspen Mountain challenges even the most seasoned skiers with its steep, expert-only runs and Snowmass, the largest of the four, is great for intermediates, offering long, sweeping trails with stunning views. For true ski aficionados, you might be looking for the mention of Aspen Highland's 'The Bowl', the legendary basin of a double-black-diamond terrain - for many skiers, this would be synonymous with crossing off a bucket-list item and is worth exploring if you are willing to hike the 12,392-foot Highland Peak to reach it.

As aforementioned, Aspen’s après-ski scene is also legendary and worth taking into consideration. Fine dining establishments such as Element 47 at The Little Nell or Matsuhisa, the starlit chain by Chef Nobu Matsuhisa, will settle those looking for contemporary, but excellent quality dining experiences, whilst those looking for a touch more might feel more at home at venues such as Cloud Nine, a restaurant perhaps more known for their Champagne parties. For something more casual, grab a cocktail at Ajax Tavern, right at the base of Aspen Mountain - this local haunt takes its name from the previous title of Aspen Mountain, one still regularly used by locals and return visitors. Take note also of the incredible accommodation on offer for those who enjoy the finer things in life, with Hotel Jerome, a member of the Auberge Resorts Collection, and The St. Regis Aspen also being a popular choice.

Despite its upmarket and often glamorous reputation, Aspen retains its small-town charm. The town’s historic buildings paired with its cultural development - from its modern art scene and numerous, well-attended festivals make it a destination for more than just skiing and snowboarding.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming: Top American Ski Resort For The Experts & Adventure Seekers

Tucked away in the rugged Tetons in Wyoming, Jackson Hole is a paradise for adventure-seeking skiers. With 4,139 feet of vertical drop and 2,500 acres of inbounds terrain across two mountains, Rendevous and Après Vous, it’s one of the steepest and most challenging ski resorts in the United States. For the non-skier, keep an open-minded view to alternative experiences - from that of the luxurious accommodations to pancakes with national acclaim, there is plenty to observe from the sidelines.

With 75 black double-diamond runs making up the majority of the range's 131 total, it has an estimate of being 50% expert, 40% intermediate and 10% beginner - perhaps making it a less friendly terrain for beginner learning. Notably famous for Corbet’s Couloir, deemed one of America's most challenging (and oft 'scariest') runs due to its steep chute with a vertical chute of almost 30 feet, Jackson Hole is not for the faint of heart. Other features worth noting include Rendezvous and Headwall Bowls, the Expert and Alta Chutes, and the opportunity to shred backcountry powder on the three unique black runs known as The Hobacks.

For those less inclined to ski or snowboard, enjoy the off-slope activities; from ice-skating on the village rink to tubing, tobogganing and more. In the hallowed corridors of luxurious hotels such as Caldera House and The Four Seasons, there are numerous spa options and appointments to pick from. For those interested in wildlife, take note of Jackson Hole's year-round viewing roster - with wintering wildlife such as bison, elk, deer and coyote available to see. The dining and après-ski options are also not to be ignored, as Conte says - North America is a food journey in itself - with a variety of restaurants in Jackson Hole alone. Some pay homage to European influences such as Snake River Grill and Orsetto, and others find their roots in Jackson Hole's American Western identity - with the quintessential steakhouses Million Dollar Cowboy Steakhouse and White Buffalo Club coming to mind first.

The town’s wild beauty, enduring ski runs and varied audience make it a unique destination for a skiing holiday and should be given considerable attention as one that caters not only to skiers but those interested in wildlife, relaxation and a healthy dose of paradise in a winter wonderland.

Whistler, British Columbia: Top American Ski Resort International Acclaim & Hospitality

With its two peaks (Whistler and Blackcomb) combined, Whistler becomes the largest ski resort in North America - a fact that perhaps would justify its multiple, annual awards in its own right. In winning the Best International Ski Destination across various publications for over five years in a row, Whistler has become synonymous with luxuriously good ski and snowboarding, alongside a packed itinerary of alternative activities, culinary spots and award-winning accommodations.

The peaks of Whistler and Blackcomb mark the spot of North Americans largest ski resort - and one with views to match.

Located just two hours from Vancouver, Whistler draws skiers and snowboarders from around the world to its 8,000 acres of terrain and 16 alpine bowls. The range offers something for everyone - from gentle beginner slopes to double black diamond runs honed for adrenaline-seekers. Whistler’s Peak 2 Peak Gondola, which connects Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, provides stunning views of the surrounding landscape and also provides ease of access across the resort - a feature we find is becoming more important in the decision-making process where Conte's clients like to ski.

Whistler’s après-ski scene is as award-winning as its slopes. For a spot of dancing, head to Longhorn Saloon, the Whistler institution and long-time iconic spot at the base of Whistler Mountain. For those looking for a more relaxed ambience try the Crystal Lounge or The Mallard Lounge at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler - and if joined by family members, a spot at the Braidwood Café and Tavern at The Four Seasons is the place to go after a long day of ski. There are numerous dining options - from farm-to-table spots and classic steakhouses, and Conte would always recommend booking with a luxury travel concierge or company to ensure that in primetime season you will always be ensured a space.

Along with classic Canadian fare, the resort is influenced by international cuisines, perhaps most visible in its acclaimed dining directory and village full of luxury shopping brands. Its pedestrian-friendly village is full of shops, art galleries, and restaurants and exudes a festive energy year-round - especially in the festive season. Whether you’re here for world-class skiing or to soak in the alpine beauty, Whistler is the winter destination to captivate the senses and experience the full potential of a winter sports vacation.
