A Few of the Best 5 Star Hotels in Tanzania
Thanda Island
Shungimbili Island Marine Reserve, Tanzania
Thanda Island (off the coast of Tanzania, in the Shungimbili Island Marine Reserve) is a truly exclusive‑use private island retreat. The accommodation comprises one luxury villa with five air-conditioned suites, plus two double‑storey traditional Tanzanian bandas (each with two suites), making the island a nine‑bedroom destination.
The villa features a glass rim‑flow swimming pool, indoor aquarium, library, air‑conditioned gym, and a wraparound dining area with panoramic ocean views. Wellness is a big part of the experience: there’s a dedicated spa team offering massages, facials and body treatments using natural Africology products - and you can choose to be treated on the beach, in your suite or elsewhere on the island. For things to do, water-based activities are central: guests can snorkel, dive, sail on an Arab dhow, kayak or SUP, and go big‑game fishing.

Aurari Camp
Northern Serengeti, Tanzania
Aurari Camp is a stylish, eco‑friendly tented camp tucked away in the Northern Serengeti, close to the Mara River in Tanzania. The camp has six spacious tents (on raised platforms), each boasting about 50 m² of indoor space comprising a bedroom, lounge area, and en‑suite bathroom, plus a private veranda. The camp is very intimate and offers a serene base for watching the Great Wildebeest Migration, especially from July to October.
Designed with sustainability in mind, the camp runs primarily on solar power, with a silent back-up generator for cloudy days, and uses water-efficient rain showers instead of baths. In the central area there’s a mess tent for dining and relaxing; meals are made to order, and there’s the option for private dining or al‑fresco “bush” meals under the stars. For activities, guests can take daily game drives, guided walks, bird-watching, hot-air balloon safaris, and even sundowners at nearby granite kopjes (like Simba Rock).

With just eight spacious tented suites alongside a luxurious two-bedroom family suite designed for ultimate comfort and tranquility, the lodge allows guests to immerse themselves in the beauty of Tanzania’s wilderness.
Embracing the philosophy of “Slow Safari,” activities include bush walks and guided sunrise runs with Maasai guides and wellness-focused morning hill climbs - although some guests may prefer to spend their time taking in the constant ebb and flow of wildlife from the pool or sun deck. With impeccable service, gourmet dining, and a rejuvenating spa, Chem Chem Lodge creates a deeply personal and transformative safari experience.

The Best Time To Visit Tanzania
Tanzania is best from July to October for safaris in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, especially during the Great Migration.
Mount Kilimanjaro treks are also most popular in August and September. For Zanzibar beach stays, January to February and July to October offer warm, dry weather and great sea conditions.
